Mozy Remote Backup

Here is the claim to fame by the
Mozy Remote Backup
service: "Mozy Online Backup is the preferred choice by Walt Mossberg of the Wall Street Journal, Christopher Null of Yahoo! Tech and winner of the PC Magazine's Editor's Choice Award. It is the most secure, feature rich and inexpensive backup service in the world." So let's sift through all the marketing rhetoric to see if this service really delivers. Mozy Remote Backup is a service that allows you to backup your files to a remote server over the web, but why do this when you can just use an external hard drive or burn data to CD/DVDs? There are a few reasons: 1. Software automates the process, you don't have to remember or take the time to do a backup yourself and your location does not matter. 2. Backing up remotely allows you to retrieve your files from any PC, so long as it has the Mozy client installed. You can also request Mozy send DVD backups to you for a fee. 3. If something bad such as a fire or flood hits your home or office, the CDs and hard drive you had been diligently backing up your system to will be destroyed along with your PC and its data. 4. If you're a mobile user who shuns lugging around a bunch of stuff, why not get rid of extra accessories such as hard drives and loose CDs and use a web connection and someone else's servers to backup your system? Here are some comments I've seen around the internet from users of Mozy Remote Backup: "It never bothers me as it simply works in the background performing backups. It's very secure as well allowing you to use your own encryption key if you wish." "Simple to use, fast, accurate data backup selection and free. I researched for a decent free online backup solution and found one that doesn't have strings attached." "Started using Mozy few weeks back, easy setup, and fast backup. Its a good, free and secure solution for any user with up to 2GB of data (you have to pay for more data) but for me, 2GB is more than plenty to save my important data. I haven't had to restore but will try that soon (just for my own peace of mind), but for me, its more than worth the extra 30 minutes to download and setup, then forget all about it while it backs up my data every time my system is left idle. Bottom line, Highly recommended, go for it, you have nothing to lose." "Mozy itself is great(I pay about $10/month) until you need technical support. My mozy backup stopped working a few weeks ago, and Mozy's tech support is very very very slow. Basically the tech support is only by email, with about 3 days between replies. So right now, three weeks have passed, and I'm still waiting for tech support's latest email." "So far so good. The update is awesome. I have had very little issues using it to backup my PC. I have also tried the restore and that worked perfectly. Great product!" Based on these user comments I think you may be satisfied with Mozy Remote Backup but as with most technical products there's always going to be weak point that one of us as consumers has to deal with. Mozy Remote Backup comes in three flavors (free, home, and pro) that are sure to handle everyone's needs. The free version is designed for very basic backups, although it offers a nice 2 GB limit, which will backup plenty of documents. Mozy Home offers unlimited backups and basically everything a home user needs at $4.95 per month. (Pre-paying for a year gets you 1 month free, while pre-paying for two years gets you 3 months free.) If you're serious about getting the piece of mind needed from knowing that all you files are safely tucked away then you may may to try the FREE version....Computer online backup should be automatic.
