Implementing Facebook advertising strategy can be an effective way to drive traffic to your Facebook page and increase your brand's visibility on Facebook in general. Anyone can sign up for Facebook advertising - you don't have to have a page to do so - and there is no set cost for an ad.

Although Internet marketing has allowed thousands of people to quit their jobs and start making a lot of money directly from the comfort of their own home, the landscape of the industry is constantly changing. Often, the old methods of making money online stop working, and new methods crop up.

This is a mixed blessing for Internet marketers. It is bad news for the folks who are already established, because it means that they constantly have to keep educated and on top of all the new developments if they want to continue to compete.

On the other hand, it is great news for people who are new to this industry and want a quick and easy way to break into the world of Internet marketing so that they can finally quit their job. One of the most powerful new developments in Internet marketing is Facebook advertising.

Let’s take a closer look at why Facebook is so important and how using it can give you a leg up against the established Internet marketers.

Facebook ads are usually most effective when their main aim is to drive traffic to a company's presence on the site (such as its page) rather than to sell a product or drive people to the company's external website. For example, instead of just advertising your website or blog, you can create ads for a specific event your company is organizing and then link the ad to the events tab on your Facebook page.

Generally, as with other online advertising, the more closely related your ad is to the destination page a user lands on after clicking on the ad, the more successful your ad will be. Facebook also allows you to target your ads so that they appear only to audience you specify, such as those of a certain age or in a particular geographic location.

Perhaps the biggest reason that anyone in the online business community should be paying attention to Facebook advertising is the sheer traffic potential. In recent months, Facebook actually surpassed Google as the #1 most visited site on the Internet.

This is astounding, since Google held that position for almost a decade. It doesn’t look like this trend is going to slow down any time soon. Millions of people log into Facebook every single day to keep in touch with their friends and family. While most Internet marketers are still focusing their attention on ranking high in Google, you can be the first to catch the new wave of Facebook advertising.

The second reason that Facebook advertising is sure to be one of the most powerful advertising methods anyone has seen on the Internet is the tremendous amount of targeting that you can achieve. You can specify that you only want your ads to appear to extremely strict groups of demographics.

For example, you could specify that your Facebook Advertising ad only appear on the profiles of women between the ages of 35 and 40 who live in Texas. When you advertise on a search engine like Google, your ads will appear to anyone who happens to search for a particular keyword phrase.

This is nice, but oftentimes you end up paying for traffic that never had any possibility of purchasing your product. If you sell a product specifically designed for women, then you might end up paying for a bunch of men to come to your site with search engine advertising. This is a waste of money.

As far as placement goes, Facebook shows your ad in places where it is contextually relevant to the theme of the ad. This could mean placing it alongside profile pages, pages, or on groups. For example, if you sell ballet shoes, your ad might appear on Facebook page for a ballet school in your area or in the ad space of the profile of someone who belongs to a dance academy.

Whichever page it appears on, your ad will always be shown on the right-hand column. Depending on the page, up to three ads may show at once; in these cases where more than one ad appears, it's not possible for you to decide whether your ad appears in first, second, or third place.

Your Facebook ad will generate the most return if you make sure you're exposing it to people who are most likely to be interested in your brand, product, or service. Although showing your ad to anyone on Facebook may generate a lot of impressions, the ratio of clicks to impressions will not be very high, and the cost of your ad relative to the return it gets is likely to be high.
