Computer viruses wreaking havoc with your computer? No?

Now's the time to make sure they never do.

It was about a year ago when I was first exposed to computer viruses. I had no idea until my brother-in-law was visiting one day and logged onto my computer to help us with some photos were trying to download.

He noticed immediately that our computer was running significantly slower than his even though we both used the same company for internet access. As he began to check the computers files he came across some files that did not seem relevant and that I wasn't familar with. When he tried to delete them (which he should have been able to) the file could not be accessed. It was as if it had it's own form of protection that would not allow anything near it.

I knew then that I was I was in trouble. After consulting with the computer manufacturer I was instructed to delete everything on my hard drive since there was no way to tell how far this virus had spread. I was instructed to save any photos I had onto a disc.

The process was long and tedious. To make matters worse I am embarrased to say that it happened again a few months later.

I discovered that the source of this problem lay in the websites my kids were frequenting. There was no way for them to know this was happening.

Since that time I have taken measures to assure that this never happens again. My kids have very restricted access to the internet through a gateway I set up that requires a password anytime they try to visit a site that is not on the approved list I set up. I also changed the anti-software I was using.

Since implemeting these simple steps I have not had any problems and my computer works great. I have assembled a couple of articles here to give you a bit more insight on this matter so you can be better prepared.

Keep Away From Those Harmful Viruses
By Gijo George

The origin of Computer Viruses is unknown, but it was there from the beginning of the Internet. Computer Viruses are nothing but special program created to harm a group of Computer Systems, which are infected by them. Like natural Viruses, these Computer Viruses are created with the capability of infecting other computers, which are connected to the infected machine.

There are many variants of Viruses such as Worms, Trojan horse, Email Viruses etc. Damage caused by these Viruses varies from Virus to Virus. Trojan horse viruses are capable to transmitting your personal information to another system. Let us review some tips to enhance your computer security.

Increase your System Protection Level. This can be done from Control Panel, Internet Option. Select the Security tab. If you want a higher security select Custom Level and set different options available such as disabling Active X controls, Java Applet and so on.

Many viruses come in disguised format. You can't just delete the Virus program from the File Manager. This makes it difficult to find out which viruses affected our system. A best option to avert these Virus attacks is installing a good Anti Virus software. By installing a good Anti-Virus software and turning it's auto protection on, you will be alerted when a Computer Virus strikes your system. Regularly scan your system with the Scanning tools that comes along with the software. As new computer viruses are being generated daily, you need to update these Anti Virus software regularly from vendor's site.

My closing comments...

I have used several FREE anti-vrus software to deal with my computer security issues as well correcting errors that resulted from infections. In each case I always chose to go with the upgrade which of course you have to pay for.

The more information you have stored on your computer the greater the risk. The greater the risk the greater the likelihood that you too will need the upgrade that comes with the FREE downloads.

I used to have Symantec protect my computer. However, I soon found it be very burdensome. It became this huge "800 pound gorilla" sitting in my hard drive. I got fed up with the restrictions it posed on my freedom with regards to how I wanted to use my computer.

Becuase of the constant updates with Symantec I soon discovered that my computer began to slow down once again because there was always a Symantec program running in the background.
