| Split Test Your Way to Millions Dave Clabeaux and Ben Moskel are the classic multimillion dollar network affiliate success story … if there is such a thing. You see Ben – a formerly unhappy lawyer, and Dave – a formerly dissatisfied teacher – didn’t have one special product to sell as a vendor, or one vertical that drove their passion. They certainly didn’t have a scheme or a racket. The ClickBank affiliates simply tested out a range of products through a series of ads and began to build multiple sites to support what worked. And with this straightforward path, they’ve made millions. The business began in 2004 not long after Ben came out of law school and realized his life would not be quite as glamorous as the show “Boston Legal.” There would be no stunning cross examinations followed by a scotch and a cigar. “I got a cubicle and I was earning $14 an hour when it was all said and done,” Moskel said. But he noticed a young woman in his law firm driving the nicest car in the lot, and it turned out she was an Internet affiliate marketing success story, earning $10,000 a month. So though he barely knew how to send an email, that was enough incentive to jumpstart Ben’s foray into Internet Marketing. As Ben tested products to sell, his college buddy Dave, who had left teaching for selling copiers, was beginning to realize that door-to-door sales was never going to make him money. He needed to reach a larger audience. That’s when Ben explained the world of online marketing. Their first step was designing one website to send traffic to one offer. Once that model worked, they duplicated it dozens of times for multiple products. Along the way, they made sure to do split testing of each landing page to be sure they were running with the best possible sites they could. They also decided to trust in a certain amount of so-called “paid search” – and even more notable – they tested paid search on sites other than Google. The results were strong. Now, before they ever launch a site, they take out an inexpensive ad in Bing or MSN to test out the potential traffic and the conversions on a given product. Only if those ads generate traffic and returns do they move forward to build an actual site to support the product. “With paid search, it’s real simple. It takes $30/$40/$50 to test an offer. Once it works, for every dollar you spend, you’re getting $2 back. How many $2 bills would you buy for a dollar?” said Ben. With these strategies, Ben was able to leave law and become a fulltime affiliate by 2006, and Dave handed in his letter of resignation by 2007. Now the two are earning up to $100,000 a month.
Be confident and be patient. Remember, it was the tortoise who won the race. Good luck with your internet business!
